When I retired in 1997, after eighteen years as Headmaster of Dilworth School, I little realised that the next ten years of my life would be consumed by another career, the writing of a definitive history of the first one hundred years of Dilworth School. I was commissioned by the Dilworth Trust Board to begin the research immediately, and to complete the writing in time for publication in the School’s centenary year, 2006 – 2007. Although having the advantage of a long and intimate association with the School and the Trust, the period of research and writing opened new vistas of understanding and not a few gems of hitherto unknown facts. Without doubt, the best decision that was made at the outset was the choice of Egan Reid Limited, now Pindar New Zealand, as publishers. The world of book publishing was foreign to me, and working closely with a publisher was a steep learning curve. But Egan Reid is a family business. In short order I became very comfortable with all the members of the enterprise and impressed by their expertise and the warmth of their dealings with a novice writer. If The Dilworth Legacy has any lasting merit, it is as much in the unsurpassed quality of the publication as in the recorded history of a school’s first century. Those who have read the book, and who have it in pride of place in their homes, are unanimous in their praise of the superior production and layout, the high quality paper and the wonderful illustrations, many of which required a good deal of expert cosmetic attention.
